■ #768. 変化しつつある RP の地位 [rp][pronunciation][bre][estuary_english][variety]

　RP ( = Received Pronunciation ) 「容認発音」の成立過程について，[2009-11-21-1]の記事「産業革命・農業革命と英語史」で簡単に触れた．RP は，18世紀後半，産業革命・農業革命の間接的な結果として生じた，19世紀には Eton, Harrow, Winchester などのパブリックスクールの発音と結びつけられ，やがて教養層の発音として広く認められるようになった．高い教育を受け RP を身につけた人々は大英帝国の政府官庁や軍隊のなかで権力を占め，RP は権威の言語となった．RP は社会的な変種であり地域的な訛りを含んでいないことから，1920年代，BBC 放送の立ち上げに際して規範的な発音として採用され，ますます人々の耳に触れるようになった．第2次世界大戦中には，BBC を通じて多くの人々に「 RP ＝自由の声」という印象が植えつけられ，その権威が広まった．
　RP が200年にわたって英国内外に築き上げてきた地位は現在でも随所に感じられる．例えば，法廷，議会，英国国教会や他の国家的機関では広く聞かれる．また，イギリス英語をモデルとする EFL 学習者にとっては，事実上，唯一のイギリス発音といってよい．実際に，英国人の RP 話者よりも外国人の RP 話者のほうが多いだろう．さらに，英語研究上，最も注目を浴びてきた変種でもある．
　しかし，現代の教養層からは，RP が古い価値観を体現する発音，posh な発音という評価も現われ始めており，かつての RP の絶対的価値は揺らいできている．メディアの発達により地域変種が広く人々の耳に入るようになって，以前よりも抵抗感や不寛容が和らいできたという理由もあろう．[2010-08-04-1]の記事「Estuary English」で見たとおり，他の変種がライバルとして影響力を高めてきているという事情もあるだろう．
　Crystal (68) も述べている通り，現在，RP の歴史は下降期に入っているようである．

For the first time since the eighteenth century, the 'prestige accent' has begun to pick up some of the negative aura which traditionally would have been associated only with some kinds of regional speech.

■ #465. Estuary English で進行中の母音推移 [estuary_english][bre][gvs][phonetics][cockney]

　昨日の記事[2010-08-04-1]で取り上げた Estuary English で進行中といわれている母音推移 ( vowel shift ) がある．1400--1700年頃に起こったとされる大母音推移 ( Great Vowel Shift; see [2009-11-18-1]) と同様に，長母音・二重母音系列に起こっているが，推移の方向は下から上ではなく，むしろ上から下である．結果として Cockney と結びつけられることの多い長母音・二重母音の音価と重なっており，この点では Estuary English と Cockney との境目は曖昧である．以下は Aitchison, p. 193 の図をもとに作成した．



　結果として，伝統的な発音に慣れている古い世代や EFL 学習者の聴き手にとっては，以下のような誤解や意味不明な表現が生じてしまうので注意が必要である．

Don't be mean	→	Don't be main [mein]
The main road	→	The mine [main] road
It's mine	→	It's moyne [moin]
See the moon	→	See the moun [maun]
Don't moan	→	Don't moun [maun]
A little mound	→	A little meund [meund]

■ #464. Estuary English [estuary_english][bre][rp][cockney][variety]

　近年イギリスに出現して影響力を広げつつある英語の変種がある．1983年に Rosewarne によって Estuary English 「河口英語」と名付けられた新しい変種で，伝統的な RP (Received Pronunciation) でもなく Cockney でもない独特な中間的な発音をもち，テムズ河口からロンドンへと勢力を広げている．1994年にイギリスの教育長官が学童に Estuary English の発音をやめさせるキャンペーンを張ったくらいだから，その拡大力の強さが知れる．名付け親の Rosewarne によれば，Estuary English は次のように説明されている．

Estuary English, a new accent variety I first described in 1984, is neither Cockney nor RP, but in the middle between these two. 'Estuary English . . . is to be found in its purest form along the seaward banks of the Thames, whither it has drifted from the eastern end of the capital' (leader article in the Independent on Sunday of 18 June 1995). The heartland still lies by the banks of the Thames and its estuary, but it has spread to other areas, as the Sunday Times announced on 14 March 1993 in a front-page headline 'Estuary English sweeps Britain'. Experts on British English agree that it is currently the strongest influence on the standard spoken form and that it could replace RP as the most influential accent in the British Isles. 　英語のお膝元のイギリスで生じている変種なだけに，議論も活発だ．Rosewarne はいずれ RP が Estuary English を飲み込むかあるいは逆のことが起こるのではないかと予想しているが，論者のなかには Estuary English は話者個人内の文体にすぎず，社会的な変種としては存在しないという者も少なくない．University College London の Estuary English では多くの情報や議論が得られる．Varieties of English の "British English" のページにも Estuary English の言語的な特徴などの有用な情報がある．
